If you’ve ever found yourself mid-trip, nauseous in the back of a taxi... trying to translate a menu that might as well be Wingdings (throwback)... or frantically searching for your missing phone... just know: your iPhone has secret tricks for that.
I’m not talking about the obvious stuff (Airplane Mode, Maps, Find My Friends). These are the hidden features, the “wait… my phone can do that?!” hacks that make traveling less chaotic, less stressful, and way more comfortable.
Let’s get into it. Starting with my all-time favorite.
1. Vehicle Motion Cues (aka: anti-car-sickness mode)
If you’ve ever tried scrolling through social media, hoping it'll make your trip go by faster… only to be left with an upset stomach that makes every minute feel like forever... this is for you.
Your iPhone can show little dots around the edge of your screen that move in sync with the motion of the car. It tricks your brain into syncing up what your eyes see with what your inner ear feels, which apparently means less nausea, less dizziness... more scrolling, or just being able to Google something or get directions without wanting to throw up.
How to turn it on: Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Show Vehicle Motion Cues.
I have mine set up to automatically show up whenever it senses I'm moving in a car or public transportation, and it's wildly accurate and effective. But I always have some dramamine on-hand too, just in case...
(And they won't show up in your screen shots! Which is why I don't have my own pic of them. Enjoy this one I took from Google.)

2. Instant Translation with Live Text
Take a photo of a menu, sign, or map in a foreign language. Highlight the text on the photo, swipe to the next set of options, and tap Translate. Boom, you suddenly understand what you’re ordering. (You might have to turn Live Photo off to highlight properly.)
This one might not work without signal, but you can download the language pack ahead of time so your phone already has it ready to translate. Here's how you do that:
Go to Settings > General > Language & Region.
Tap Add Language… and pick the one you’ll need.
This adds it to your device and downloads the language pack.
Then go to Settings > Translate > Downloaded Languages.
Tap the little download icon next to each language to store it.
Once that’s set up, when you use need to translate something, it’ll still work even without Wi-Fi or cell service. Perfect for wandering around without roaming data.

ALL the conversions your heart desires (temperature, units, currency, just to name a few)
The Calculator app does conversions for everything. Seriously. Temperatures, distances, weights, even currencies. It's insane.
So the next time you’re staring at a European AirBnB listing wondering if 18°C is “cozy” or “hypothermia,” just open your calculator and tap the calculator icon in the bottom lefthand corner. And explore a whole new world at your fingertips!
Great for cooking, shopping, traveling, everything.

4. Flight Info from a Text
If someone texts you a flight number — or if you text it to yourself — it turns into a tappable link. Tap it, and you’ll see live flight info: delays, gates, departure times. Way easier than downloading every airline app, or just a good backup to have.
5. Back Tap Shortcuts
You can double or triple tap the back of your phone to make it do different things, which can be super convenient if you're in a rush or you only have 1 hand to work with.
Tap to turn on the flashlight in a dark hotel hallway or searching through your bag. (Although this sometimes led to me unintentionally turning my flashlight on so, be aware of accidental touches.)
Tap to launch Google Translate so you don't skip a beat.
Tap to access your Wallet. Instant access to your boarding pass or hotel key.
Tap to screenshot. Great for saving boarding passes, maps, or directions in case you lose service, all with one hand.
How to set it up: Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap (all the way at the bottom).
And you can assign double and triple tap commands, so you can choose 2 shortcuts.

6. Screen Distance (Save Your Eyes)
On long flights, it’s way too easy to hold your phone six inches from your face for hours. The Screen Distance feature actually detects this and tells you to back it up before you fry your eyeballs.
Kind of like a digital mom nagging you to “sit up straight,” but honestly? She’s right.
Here’s how to set up Screen Distance:
Go to Settings > Screen Time.
Tap Screen Distance.
Toggle it On.
FYI this only works on iPhones and iPads with a TrueDepth camera (the same one used for Face ID). That’s what lets it measure how close your face is to the screen.
Once it’s on, if you hold your phone too close for an extended period (Apple says “closer than 12 inches”), a friendly reminder pops up: “iPhone is Too Close.”
7. Background Sounds
If your hotel room AC sounds like a dying jet engine, or you just need to drown out airport chaos: your iPhone can play built-in background sounds like rain, ocean, or white noise. It's like a little added layer of white noise in the background of your headphones. You can choose to have it stay on, or turn off when you're playing other videos and music.
Settings > Accessibility > Audio / Visual > Background Sounds. Even better: assign it to your triple-click side button for instant relief without shuffling through Spotify.
Here’s how to wire Background Sounds (or basically anything else) to your triple-click side button:
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut (scroll all the way down).
You’ll see a list of features you can assign. Tap Background Sounds.
Now, whenever you triple-click the side button (or home button on older iPhones), it’ll toggle Background Sounds on / off instantly.

8. Measure + Scan Without Extra Apps
The Measure app can help you figure out if that “personal item” actually fits under the seat in front of you. And the Notes app can scan passports, visas, receipts — whatever you don’t want to lose.
9. Lock Down Airplane Mode (Don’t Let Thieves Ghost Your Phone)
If someone steals your phone, the very first thing they’ll probably do is put it in Airplane Mode, because once your phone is offline, you can’t track it.
But you can work around this so you can track your phone in Airplane Mode:
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked.
Toggle Control Center off.
Now, nobody can kill your signal without unlocking your phone first.
For bonus protection, add a SIM PIN (Settings > Cellular > SIM PIN). That way, even if someone tries to swap or eject your SIM card, it’s locked down tight.
Basically, you’re making it way harder for a thief to make your phone “disappear.”
Final Thoughts
Most people think of their iPhone as just a camera and boarding pass holder when they travel. But it’s basically a Swiss Army knife if you know where to look.
Try a couple of these hacks on your next trip and see which ones actually stick in your routine.
And if nothing else, remember this: if you’re carsick, jet-lagged, overstimulated, or trying not to get scammed by a mystery menu, there’s probably already a hidden setting on your phone that has your back.
So did any of these surprise you? Have any hacks I missed? Let us know in the comments!
